EH SmartLink is a set of several web services listed here.

What is a web service?

A web service is defined as “a software system designed to support machine-to-machine interaction over a network”. Web services have been created to allow different IT platforms to work together. They are simply applications that run on the web.

With web services you can exchange data between different applications and different platforms. EH SmartLink web services are documented with a certain structure.

How do web services work?

Web services use XML to code and to decode data, and SOAP to transport it (using open protocols). Web services can help to solve the interoperability problem by giving different applications a way to link their data.

Web services are nothing more than a request/response mechanism that allows a client to remotely access/modify data.
